DW Reusables launches Versatile Tray: reusable return packs designed for every beverage format

2024/11/25

DW Reusables introduces the Versatile Tray, a reusable retail-ready packaging solution developed to support more sustainable and efficient beverage supply chains.

Following a successful pilot project with Carrefour Belgium and the beer brand Cornet, the new system expands the concept into a scalable solution suitable for multiple pack formats and bottle types.

Designed as a reusable alternative to one-way secondary packaging, the Versatile Tray supports circular beverage logistics while improving operational efficiency for breweries and retailers.

One reusable system for multiple beverage formats

Traditional secondary packaging often creates unnecessary waste, additional handling, and operational complexity throughout the beverage supply chain.

The Versatile Tray was developed to simplify these flows through a flexible reusable packaging system that accommodates multiple pack sizes, including 4-, 6-, and 8-pack configurations, as well as different bottle formats.

The trays can also be customised and rebranded according to marketing and retail requirements, allowing beverage brands to maintain strong shelf visibility while transitioning towards reusable packaging systems.

Integrated Unique Identifiers (UIDs) further improve traceability, inventory management, and return flow efficiency across the supply chain.

Designed to improve retail and brewery operations

Beyond sustainability, the Versatile Tray was designed with operational performance in mind.

For retailers, the system simplifies shelf replenishment and improves labour efficiency through easier handling and streamlined logistics flows. For breweries, the reusable tray system reduces dependency on disposable packaging while lowering sorting costs and improving the return rate of empty bottles.

The trays are also engineered for efficient stacking in both cross-stack and column-stack configurations, maximising storage utilisation and improving transport efficiency throughout distribution operations.

By combining flexibility, durability, and operational efficiency, the Versatile Tray enables beverage producers and retailers to take practical steps towards more circular packaging systems.

The result: a scalable step towards circular beverage packaging

By replacing one-way secondary packaging with reusable trays, the Versatile Tray helps reduce packaging waste and lower CO₂ emissions across beverage logistics flows.

At the same time, the system improves operational consistency, reduces handling complexity, and supports more efficient return logistics between breweries, retailers, and distribution centres.

The project reflects a broader shift within the beverage industry towards reusable packaging systems that combine sustainability with measurable operational value.

“With the Versatile Tray, we wanted to create a solution that makes reusable packaging easier to implement at scale,” said Josip Blasković, Sales Director at DW Reusables. “It is designed to improve operational efficiency while supporting the transition towards a more circular beverage supply chain.”

The innovation was presented by DW Reusables during BrauBeviale, one of the leading trade fairs for the beverage industry.
